Exhibition "Quilts of Mieke"

The doors of the Lodewijkskerkje are open during the summer Saturday afternoons. In addition to viewing the monumental building, you can view artists' work entirely without obligation. This afternoon and that of Sunday afternoon September 13(Open Monumentendag) the quilts of Mieke can be admired.

Handcrafting has been a great hobby for her from a young age. It already started in elementary school, and since the 1990s she has been engaged in patchwork and quilting. While visiting an exhibition in a church in Alkmaar, her interest was really piqued. She thought: I want to learn that too. And a few years later she took a course in Oisterwijk.

Quilting is a patient job, but that is exactly what makes it so enjoyable and relaxing for her. She likes to work with colorful fabrics, mostly by hand and sometimes with the sewing machine. She also enjoys sharing this hobby with others.

She regularly takes workshops to learn new techniques and meet other people. Also within a quilting group a lot is learned from each other, which makes it extra fun and inspiring. Sometimes she manages to make others enthusiastic about quilting, and that remains special to see.

She does not sell her work. Over the years she has made many quilts for daughters, grandchildren, her mother and sister, and occasionally as gifts. Because a lot of time goes into each piece, she does not work on commission. She hopes visitors enjoy (coming to) look at her work.
