Lecture IVN Myxomycetes or slime molds
Witch butter, bare butt fungus or frizzled heads...? If you recognize these names, you might belong to the (growing) group of enthusiasts of the Myxomycetes, also called slime mushrooms.
They often have the appearance of a very small toadstool (2-3 mm!) and develop from an amoeba-like reproductive cell, not from fungal filaments. They are usually found in groups on dead and living wood such as branches, logs and bark but also on leaves, stems and moss. Myxomycetes have a variety of colors that make them stand out and not difficult to find.
